NEW: Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program Opening Soon!  Pre-Application Enrollment Period: 9am January 17, 2023 - 5pm February 3, 2023.

The New Jersey Department of Community Affairs (DCA), Division of Housing and Community Resources (DHCR) will be accepting Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program pre­ applications online at: www.WaitlistCheck.com/NJ559 for the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) Program waiting list state-wide. The Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program is a federally funded program that provides housing subsidies to New Jersey residents, so that they can obtain decent, safe, and sanitary housing. A total of 20,000 households will be selected through a random lottery system and be placed on the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program waiting list.

DETAILS: Enrollment Period is Tuesday, January 17, 2023 at 9 AM - Friday February 3, 2023 at 5PM

WHERE: The Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program pre-application can be submitted ONLINE with the use of a personal computer, laptop, smart phone, or tablet by going to www.WaitlistCheck.com/NJ559.

Reasonable Accommodation: DCA will accept reasonable accommodations request from disabled individuals on a case-by-case basis. An individual can call DCA Customer Service Unit at 609-292-4080, Option 9, if a reasonable accommodation is needed during the hours of 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM seven days a week, or email at: [email protected] during the opening period.

Jersey City Housing Authority 

The Jersey City Housing Authority offers low-income and senior citizens affordable housing through HUD programs. Section 8 Housing Assistance Payment Program helps families pay rent. The Public Housing Program offers affordable units managed by the JCRA.

Hudson County Housing Finder

The Hudson County Housing Finder is a tool to search for affordable housing in Hudson County. Users can find housing based on amenity, location, income level, number of household members, etc. Buildings can be applied to directly. 


New Jersey Housing Resource Center

The New Jersey Housing Resource Center website hosts resources for rental assistance, affordable housing, homeowner assistance, and emergency relief. It also has population-specific resources for seniors, veterans, disabled and those who are HIV/AIDS-inflicted.

Notices Posted to the Jersey Journal

New affordable housing lotteries are posted in the Jersey Journal Classifieds for a minimum of 30 days. To find affordable housing posts, click "Notices and Announcements." Then, click "Advanced Search" and enter 'affordable housing' as the keyword. Finally, filter for "Jersey Journal" on the left-hand side. Please note: sometimes, there are no affordable housing lotteries at the time of search.

Affordable Housing Online lists currently available affordable housing units in Jersey City in the low-income bracket. Users can see unit requirements and go directly to development websites.
