According to the State of NJ Judiciary website, "the Municipal Courts in New Jersey are considered courts of limited jurisdiction, having responsibility for motor vehicle and parking tickets, minor criminal-type offenses, municipal ordinance offenses, and other offenses.  A Municipal Court usually has jurisdiction only over cases that occur within the boundaries of its municipality.

"Serious criminal cases, such as robbery, auto theft, or assault, may start out as complaints filed in the Municipal Court but are transferred to the Superior Court located at the county courthouse."

OTHER WAYS TO RESOLVE TRAFFIC MATTERS

Online Municipal Case Resolution- No Court Appearance Required

Online ticket review is available to dispute certain moving and parking violations through the Online Municipal Case Resolution system.  By having a violation reviewed online, it is not necessary to make a court appearance.  Visit njmcdirect.com and enter your ticket information to see if your offense is eligible, and select the option for Case Dispute.  All communication will be sent via email.

Plea By Mail

You may elect to resolve your matter without the need for a virtual hearing by completing the Plea by Mail form.  This form may only be used to plead not guilty or guilty in certain traffic or parking cases, or guilty in certain non-traffic cases.  Completed forms and any supporting documents can be emailed to [email protected] or mailed via US Mail.

Request For A Hearing

If your matter is not eligible for online ticket review, you can still request to have certain tickets heard in the Jersey City Virtual Municipal Court.  To plead not guilty and request a virtual court hearing, please complete the Plea of Not Guilty form
