Cheerleading

Open to both boys and girls, ages four to 18, the Jersey City Liberty All Stars Cheerleading Squad meets three times a week for cheerleading practice and gymnastics training, before competition season begins in December. Begun eight years ago with one team of 20 cheerleaders,  since then the Cheerleading Program has grown to four teams with over 100 participants, and competes both nationally and state-wide.  This past year, the Liberty All Stars took the title of 2009 Jersey Shore Cheer Champions and qualified for the International World Competition held in Atlantic City in May.

“Cheerleading is not just shaking pom-poms anymore,” says Program Coordinator Krissey Zadroga. “People are surprised at how physical it is. It’s hard core training and teaches teamwork.”  This year, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) recognized cheerleading as a sport, and both the University of Maryland and the University of Oregon have begun offering full cheerleading athletic scholarships.
