For Urban Coastal Flooding"

The City of Jersey City is exploring potential strategies to increase its coastal flooding resilience.Flood Gate At Tidewater image

With funding from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Sea Grant program, the Division of City Planning has partnered with Stevens Institute of Technology’s coastal flooding scientists on the Collaborative Climate Adaptation Planning For Urban Coastal Flooding Study to identify potential adaptation measures, such as levees and floodgates, and assess their ability to mitigate the impacts of coastal flooding caused by storm surge and climate change.

In response to the devastation of Superstorm Sandy, and with the understanding that future storms will likely increase in frequency and intensity, this study is an early phase of a long-term effort to identify and implement adaptation measures.

Additionally, the City was awarded a grant from Together North Jersey’s Local Government Capacity Grant program to develop visualizations for a subset of the potential adaptation measures and prepare a white paper that describes a framework for a cost-benefit analysis of potential adaptation measures.

Twenty-seven potential adaptation measures throughout Jersey City have been identified, and visualizations for six of them have been prepared. It is anticipated that final reporting for this project will be complete by early 2015.

A public open house was held on Wednesday, July 30, 2014 at City Hall to begin a dialogue with the public on how to make Jersey City more resilient.

The following materials from the public open house are available for download:
