John J. Hallanan III was appointed to the Municipal Council on June 2, 2016 to represent Ward B. Prior to being appointed to the Council, he was employed in the City’s Law Department as Assistant Corporation Counsel. In that capacity, he defended Jersey City in tort claims litigation, drafted ordinances and resolutions, and drafted memoranda on the legal implications of policy initiatives. He also served as counsel to the Rent Leveling Board, the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board, and as a part-time Assistant Municipal Prosecutor.
Prior to joining the Law Department, Councilman Hallanan worked as an attorney in private practice and served Jersey City as a Commissioner on the City’s Historic Preservation Commission. He began his legal career as a law clerk to the Honorable John J. Langan, Jr. Councilman Hallanan served as president of several local non-profit organizations including the Jersey City Landmarks Conservancy, the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick of Hudson County, and the Lincoln Association of Jersey City. He is vice-president of the Saint Peter’s University Alumni Board.
Councilman Hallanan obtained his Juris Doctorate from Rutgers University School of Law-Newark, his Master’s Degree, with Merit, from the London School of Economics and his Bachelor’s degree, with Honors from Saint Peter’s University. He lives in the Lincoln Park neighborhood with his wife.
