Biography
Councilman Sottolano is a lifelong resident of Jersey City, the last forty-one of those years as a Greenville resident. Educated in Jersey City at Saint Joseph’s Grammar School, William L. Dickinson High School, and Saint Peter’s College, he also attended Rutgers University, Center for Government Services in Newark, New Jersey.
His early employment was at Western Electric in Kearny and Progresso Foods in Jersey City. He was later employed by the City of Jersey City where he was responsible for creating the City’s first Data Processing Center. This endeavor changed many of the City’s operations into “state of the art processes.” He attained the position of Assistant Director of Information Technology and, after thirty-seven years of service, he retired in September 2004.
Sottolano has served in the Our Lady of Mercy Parish community as a member of the Parish Council, as President of the Holy Name Society, and as a Eucharistic Minister. He was Treasurer of the Jersey City Federal Credit Union, Vice President of the Jersey City Supervisors Association, and a management labor organizer. He was also honored as “Greenville Man of the Year.”
Michael J. Sottolano takes great pride in his involvement with youth in both spiritual and athletic activities over the past forty years. Whether it has been as a coach, an official, a coordinator of various sports event, or as chief cook and bottle washer for Church-associated youth/young adult retreats, he feels it is a great privilege to serve the young people of this community.
As Councilman for Ward A during the past four years, his office has serviced over 1,500 calls. He welcomes the responsibility of maintaining and improving his ward with whatever resources the City is able to provide. Police and Fire protection have been dramatically increased during the past four years and this activity will continue throughout the term of the present administration.
Councilman Sottolano and his thirty-seven years of government experience are an asset as he pursues the stabilization of taxes with the use of sound budget practices.
