Doing Business In Jersey City

Congratulations on your decision to start a business in Jersey City.  As Obi-Wan Kenobi would say, "You've taken your first step into a larger world".  Of course, it's not as easy as having a great idea, renting a storefront, and making your first million - - there are State and County forms to complete, and Local licenses to obtain.  We hope this page of links will make that necessary process somewhat easier.

What's in a name?
The State of NJ, through its Business Gateway Service, allows you to check the availability and/or reserve names for your business.  Note that according to the website "Sole proprietors and partnerships do not reserve a business name".  However, if you are starting a sole proprietorship or a general partnership and intend to operate under a trade name or a name that includes the designation "and company" or "& co.," you are required to register your business's name with the County Clerk of the county or counties in which you intend to conduct or transact business.  Check for a business name.

Filing and registering your business
Again, the State of NJ provides general assistance on registering your business.

Required Jersey City licenses
Don't give up, you're almost there.  Depending on what type of business you plan to open, the City of Jersey City also requires certain licenses.  Naturally, your place of business needs to conform to existing construction and zoning codes. Your landlord and/or contractor should be aware of these.  The following is a list of licenses issued by the City and which Division is responsible for issuing them.  For more information on licenses and fees, visit the respective division's webpages or call the divisions for assistance.

Opportunities for Local, Minority-Owned and/or Women-Owned Business Enterprises (MWBE)
The Jersey City Office of Equal Employment Opportunity/Affirmative Action (EEO/AA) works to provide equal access and equal opportunity in employment, procurement, and contracting within Jersey City. To ensure that various contractors abide by the terms of their Project Employment and Contracting Agreement and other Federal, State and Local regulations, EEO/AA maintains a list of business contracting opportunities.  While these opportunities are not bid solicitations for City government projects and are extended to the public on a non-discriminatory, the City encourages MWBEs to submit quotations.  Get more information.
